Who is Volvo?

Volvo is a Swedish car maker founded in Gothenburg. Its range has long included practical saloons and estates, and now spans SUVs and fully electric models. Volvo Cars is part of the Geely group.

Which Volvo models are in the range?

The model names offer a useful guide: S models are saloons, V models are estates, and XC models include SUVs and cross-country versions. The XC60, XC40 and XC90 are among Volvo’s best represented models in EU registration figures. The V60 and V90 continue the estate tradition, while the S60 and S90 are saloons.

Earlier models include the 240, 740, 850 and 940, followed by cars such as the S40, V50 and V70. More recent names include the XC40 and XC60, alongside electric models such as the C40, EX30, EX40, EX90 and ES90. The V40 ran through 2021; the XC90 and S60 are among Volvo’s longest-running nameplates.

How has Volvo’s range developed?

Volvo’s model history runs from traditional saloons and estates to a broader range of family cars and SUVs. The 850 brought front-wheel drive and a transverse five-cylinder engine to the line-up, as well as an estate version. Later, cross-country versions added a more rugged look to familiar saloon and estate shapes. The XC70 and XC90 expanded the SUV and crossover family, and the XC40 brought a smaller SUV to the range.

Electric models have become a more visible part of the line-up. The C40 joined the range in 2021, followed by the EX30 in 2023. The EC40 and EX40 names appeared in 2024, alongside the EX90; the ES90 followed in 2025, and the EX60 in 2027. These sit alongside established models such as the XC60 and V60.

Where are Volvo’s figures available?

Volvo figures cover the European Union, the United Kingdom, France, the United States and Canada. European information includes EU registrations and figures from UK and French sources; North American figures come from the EPA and NRCan.

Consumption and emissions tests differ by market. European figures use WLTP or, for older cars, NEDC; the USA uses EPA ratings, while Canada uses the 5-cycle method. Results are most useful when compared within the same market and test procedure.
