What is the Volvo EC40?

The Volvo EC40 is a fully electric crossover with a sloping, coupé-like roofline. It sits in Volvo’s electric range alongside its SUVs, with a shape that gives it a lower, sleeker profile than a conventional upright SUV. The EC40 name fits Volvo’s naming pattern for its electric models.

Volvo renamed the C40 Recharge as the EC40 for the 2025 model year. The change brought the name into line with the brand’s other electric models; the car continued as the same model rather than a new generation.

Generations

The EC40 generation runs from 2025 to today and uses Volvo’s CMA platform. It continues the C40 Recharge, so earlier cars may carry that badge.

Engines and power

Every EC40 is electric. In the EU, power ranges from 175 kW (238 PS) to 325 kW (442 PS). UK figures span 175 kW (238 PS) to 442 kW (601 PS), while Canada lists 185 kW (252 PS) to 300 kW (408 PS). US figures identify electric versions without giving a power range.

EU registration figures cover 2024–2025 and record 11,355 cars. UK figures cover 2024–2026, US figures 2025–2026, and Canadian figures 2025–2026. European energy-use and range figures use WLTP or NEDC procedures, while the US EPA and Canadian 5-cycle procedures differ.

Markets

The EC40 appears in official figures for the EU, UK, United States and Canada. Power versions vary by market, so figures are best read alongside the country they apply to.
