What is the Volvo S40?
The S40 was Volvo’s compact saloon, a smaller four-door model below the S80 in the Swedish maker’s range. Its separate boot and compact footprint suited drivers who wanted a traditional saloon without moving up to a larger executive car. The S40 shared its name with the V40 estate, but had a distinct three-box saloon body.
The S40 brought Volvo’s saloon format into a more compact size. Across its generations, the design became more rounded while retaining the four-door layout.
S40 generations
The first generation ran from 2000 to 2004 under the P1 code. The second generation, also listed under P1, followed from 2004 to 2012. The year ranges overlap during the changeover between generations.
Engines and power
EU and UK listings cover engines from 1.6 to 2.5 litres, with EU power ranging from 74 kW (101 PS) to 169 kW (230 PS). UK figures span 125 kW (170 PS) to 127 kW (172 PS). European versions included petrol and diesel, while flex-fuel E85 appears in EU and UK listings.
In the US and Canada, listings cover 1.9- to 2.5-litre petrol engines. The line-up varied by market and year.
Fuel consumption and CO₂
The lowest listed UK consumption is 3.8 L/100 km on the NEDC test. The US EPA’s best combined result is 24 MPG, alongside a lowest listed figure of 9.8 L/100 km. Canada records 9.9 L/100 km on its 5-cycle procedure. The figures use different test methods: NEDC in the UK, EPA testing in the US and the 5-cycle test in Canada, so they are not directly comparable.
Where was the S40 sold?
EU registration figures cover the S40 from 2010 to 2013, UK figures from 2006 to 2013, US listings from 2000 to 2011 and Canadian listings from 2001 to 2011. In the EU, the 1.6-litre diesel was among the most registered versions in the listed years.
