What is the Volvo EX40?

The EX40 is Volvo’s compact electric SUV, with the raised driving position and practical shape many drivers want for everyday use. It sits between the smaller EX30 and larger EX90 in Volvo’s electric range. Its upright roofline gives it a different profile from the sleeker EC40.

Volvo renamed the fully electric XC40 Recharge the EX40 for the 2025 model year, aligning its name with the company’s other electric models. The XC40 name remains in use for combustion-powered versions. The EX40 is based on Volvo’s CMA platform.

Engines and power

Every EX40 is fully electric. Listed power ranges from 128 kW (174 PS) to 325 kW (442 PS) in the European Union, 175 kW (238 PS) to 442 kW (601 PS) in the UK, and 185 kW (252 PS) to 300 kW (408 PS) in Canada. US figures identify two electric versions without stating their power.

Volvo offers single-motor and twin-motor configurations, with all-wheel drive on twin-motor versions. For 2025, Volvo increased the battery capacity available on the Twin Motor and raised the maximum DC charging rate.

How economical is the Volvo EX40?

The EX40 runs on electricity, so it has no petrol or diesel consumption figure. Energy use and range vary by version and market. European tests use WLTP or NEDC, while the US EPA and Canada’s 5-cycle procedure use different methods; results from these markets are not directly comparable.

Official EU registration figures record 44,047 EX40s in 2024–2025. The most registered individual version was the 185 kW (252 PS) electric model, with 15,992 registrations in 2025.

Where was the EX40 sold?

The EX40 appears in UK certification figures for 2024–2026 and in US and Canadian figures for 2025–2026. It also appears in EU registration figures for 2024–2025. Before the name change, the fully electric model was sold as the XC40 Recharge.
