What is the Volvo XC70?

The XC70 is Volvo’s raised, rugged take on the V70 estate, with the load space and comfort of a wagon and styling suited to rougher roads. It carried forward the Cross Country idea first seen on the V70 Cross Country in 1997. That mix of everyday practicality and a more outdoors-focused character gives the XC70 a distinct place among Volvo estates.

In the UK, US and Canada, figures span 2003–2016. EU registration figures cover 2010–2018, while France’s figures cover 2012–2015.

XC70 generations

The second generation, known by Volvo’s P2 platform code, ran from 2003 to 2007. The third generation, on the P3 platform, followed from 2008 to 2016. The later car brought a newer design to the raised estate, while keeping the practical shape and rugged details that defined the XC70.

Engines and power

Across the listed markets, the XC70 had engines from 2.0 L to 3.2 L, depending on market and model year. European versions included diesel, petrol and other fuel types; US and Canadian versions listed here were petrol. EU power ranged from 120 kW (163 PS) to 224 kW (305 PS). The 2.4 L diesel rated at 133 kW (181 PS) was among the most registered EU configurations in the years shown.

How economical is the Volvo XC70?

The lowest listed consumption is 4.4 L/100 km in UK NEDC figures. France’s lowest is 4.5 L/100 km, also on NEDC. In the US, the lowest figure is 8.7 L/100 km, with a best combined rating of 27 MPG under the EPA test. Canada’s lowest is 8.8 L/100 km under the NRCan 5-cycle procedure. European figures use NEDC here, while the US uses EPA and Canada uses the 5-cycle test; these procedures differ, so figures are best compared within each market.
