Who is Audi?
Audi is a German car maker in the Volkswagen Group, known for its four-ring badge, understated design and the quattro name for its all-wheel-drive technology. Its roots reach back to August Horch and the company he founded in 1909; the four rings later came to represent the four companies that joined to form Auto Union. Audi’s modern identity took shape after the Second World War, and the company became part of the Volkswagen Group in the 1960s.
Audi’s main model lines
The A names cover the passenger-car range, from compact choices such as the A1 and A3 to larger executive cars such as the A6 and A8. The Q family brings together SUVs, including the Q3, Q5 and Q7. The TT and R8 add sportier coupes, while the earlier range also included names such as the 80, 100, Coupe and Cabriolet.
The A3 and A4 have been especially prominent in EU registration figures: between 2010 and 2025, the A3 recorded 3,763,493 registrations and the A4 2,968,084. The A6, A1, Q3 and Q5 also feature among the most registered Audi lines in that period.
How the range developed
The model names show a shift from older numbered saloons and coupes towards the A and Q families. The A4 has a long run in the listed years, from 1992 to 2026, while the A6 spans 1995 to 2027 and the A8 1997 to 2027. The A3 joined in 2000 and the Q3 in 2011, reflecting the growing place of compact cars and SUVs in Audi’s range.
Audi’s quattro identity also has a technological and sporting thread: the quattro debuted in 1980, bringing all-wheel drive to a road-going coupe and helping make the name central to the brand. Across the range, familiar model lines continued while newer electric names appeared.
Electrification and markets
The e-tron name marks Audi’s electric era in this model range. The e-tron appears from 2018, followed by the Q4 e-tron and Q6 e-tron from 2020. Plug-in hybrid versions sit alongside combustion models in parts of the A and Q ranges, giving buyers more than one route to electrification.
Audi figures are available across the European Union, the United Kingdom, France, the United States and Canada. European WLTP and older NEDC results, US EPA ratings and Canada’s 5-cycle ratings use different test procedures, so figures from one market should be read in their own test context.
