What is the Volvo S80?

The S80 was Volvo’s large executive saloon, positioned near the top of the Swedish maker’s range. It was a dedicated four-door model, rather than a saloon version of an estate, with a roomy cabin and a separate boot. It took the brand’s large-saloon role before the S90 followed.

The S80 brought Volvo’s restrained design into the executive class. Its first generation also introduced features such as a transverse six-cylinder engine and front seats designed to help protect occupants from whiplash.

S80 generations

The first generation, known by the P2 code, ran from 1999 to 2006. The second generation, code P3, followed from 2007 to 2016, with a redesigned body and updated cabin. Volvo retired the S80 name after that generation; the S90 later took on the large-saloon role.

Engines and power

EU listings cover 1.6- to 3.2-litre engines, with power from 80 kW (109 PS) to 224 kW (305 PS). UK listings span 1.6 to 4.4 litres, while French figures record power from 84 kW (114 PS) to 224 kW (305 PS). European versions included petrol and diesel, with flex-fuel E85 also appearing in EU and UK listings.

North American listings cover petrol engines from 2.0 to 4.4 litres. The S80’s engine line-up varied with market and year.

Fuel consumption and CO₂

The lowest listed consumption is 4 L/100 km in both the UK and France, measured on the NEDC procedure. The US EPA’s best combined result is 29 MPG, alongside a lowest listed figure of 8.1 L/100 km. Canada’s lowest listed result is 8.3 L/100 km on the 5-cycle test. These figures use different procedures: Europe’s older figures are NEDC, the US uses EPA testing and Canada uses a 5-cycle test, so they are not directly comparable.

Where was the S80 sold?

EU registration figures cover the S80 from 2010 to 2017, and UK figures from 2000 to 2016. French figures run from 2012 to 2015, while US and Canadian listings span 1999–2016. EU registrations show 2.4-litre diesel versions among the most registered in the earliest listed year, followed by 2.0-litre diesels in later years.
