What is the Audi A8?
The A8 is Audi’s flagship luxury saloon, with a spacious cabin and a focus on comfort for long journeys. It helped establish Audi in the luxury class when it arrived with the brand’s Audi Space Frame aluminium construction and optional quattro all-wheel drive.
Audi has built the A8 through four generations: D2 (1994–2002), D3 (2002–2010), D4 (2010–2017) and D5 (2017–today). Its role as a large, technology-focused saloon has endured, while its engines and equipment have changed over time.
Engines and power
The A8 has used petrol and diesel engines, as well as hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions. EU entries span 2.0 to 6.3 litres and 155 kW (211 PS) to 445 kW (605 PS). UK figures range from 145 kW (197 PS) to 420 kW (571 PS).
EU registration figures include a 4.1-litre diesel among the most registered versions in 2010, followed by 3.0-litre diesels in 2011 and 2018.
How economical is the Audi A8?
The lowest EU figure for petrol, diesel and hybrid versions is 7.1 L/100 km on WLTP. The plug-in hybrid weighted figure is 1.9 L/100 km on WLTP, assuming some driving is electric. UK and French figures are 5.6 and 5.9 L/100 km respectively, both on NEDC. WLTP and NEDC are different European test procedures.
The lowest listed US figure is 8.4 L/100 km on EPA, with a best combined rating of 28 MPG. Canada also lists 8.4 L/100 km, measured on NRCan’s 5-cycle procedure. For plug-in hybrids, the weighted figures are 10.2 L/100 km on EPA and 10.3 L/100 km on Canada’s 5-cycle test. WLTP and NEDC in Europe, EPA in the US and Canada’s 5-cycle procedure use different tests, so market figures are not directly comparable.
Where was it sold?
EU registration figures span 2010–2025 and total 138,626. UK figures reach from 2000 to 2026, US EPA figures from 1997 to 2027, Canadian NRCan figures from 1997 to 2026, and France’s ADEME figures from 2012 to 2015.
