What is the Audi R8?
The R8 is Audi’s mid-engined sports car, with its engine behind the passenger compartment. It brought the brand’s road cars closer to its motorsport heritage and was offered with quattro all-wheel drive. The first generation, Type 42, ran from 2008 to 2015; the second, Type 4S, followed from 2016 to 2024. The later car sharpened the design and added the RWS rear-wheel-drive version alongside quattro models.
Engines and power
Petrol engines in the UK, US and Canadian R8 entries span 4.2 to 5.2 litres. EU entries show a wider range of fuel labels, but petrol V8 and V10 models define the car’s history. EU power ranges from 316 kW (430 PS) to 456 kW (620 PS); UK versions span 309 kW (420 PS) to 449 kW (610 PS), and French entries range from 316 kW (430 PS) to 419 kW (570 PS). The first Type 42 used a mid-mounted V8, while the Type 4S later introduced the RWS rear-wheel-drive version.
How economical is the Audi R8?
The lowest listed consumption is 13.1 L/100 km in EU figures, 11.4 L/100 km in UK figures and 12.4 L/100 km in French figures. The US EPA rates the R8 at 18 MPG combined, equivalent to 13.1 L/100 km. Canada’s lowest listed result is 13.1 L/100 km on the NRCan 5-cycle test. These figures come from different procedures: Europe uses WLTP or older NEDC tests, the US uses EPA testing, and Canada uses its 5-cycle test.
Where was the R8 sold?
The R8 appears in EU registration figures for 2010–2025, with 25,418 registrations. UK figures cover 2008–2018, while US and Canadian figures cover 2008–2023. French entries span 2012–2015. Among the most registered EU configurations are 5.2-litre petrol versions from both generations.
