What is the BMW X1?
The X1 is BMW’s compact five-door sport utility vehicle, which BMW calls a Sports Activity Vehicle. It brings a higher seating position and a versatile cabin to the smaller end of the X range. Its compact shape makes it suited to everyday driving while offering the flexible layout many drivers want from an SUV.
BMW developed the X1 as its entry to the premium compact SAV segment, extending the X family established by larger models. It appears in European Union registration figures from 2010 to 2025 and UK figures from 2010 to 2026. It has also been sold in France, the United States and Canada.
Generations
The first generation, E84, ran from 2009 to 2015. The F48 followed from 2015 to 2022, and the U11 began in 2022. The X1 has kept its compact, five-door role while gaining a wider choice of powertrains, including hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions.
Engines and power
In the EU, engines range from 1.5 L to 3.0 L, with power from 85 kW (116 PS) to 294 kW (400 PS). The range includes petrol, diesel, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric versions. UK engines span 1.5 L to 2.0 L, with power from 110 kW (150 PS) to 240 kW (326 PS). US and Canadian versions listed here have petrol engines from 2.0 L to 3.0 L.
How economical is the BMW X1?
In the EU, the lowest listed consumption for petrol, diesel and hybrid versions is 4.8 L/100 km on WLTP. The lowest plug-in hybrid figure is 0.7 L/100 km WLTP, an official weighted figure that assumes some driving is electric. The UK low is 4.1 L/100 km on NEDC, while France records 4.5 L/100 km on NEDC. WLTP and NEDC are different test procedures, so the European figures are not directly comparable.
The EPA’s lowest listed US figure is 8.4 L/100 km, with a best combined rating of 28 MPG. Canada’s NRCan 5-cycle low is 8.3 L/100 km. The EPA and Canadian 5-cycle procedures differ from European WLTP and NEDC tests.
