What is the BMW X4?

The BMW X4 is a mid-size crossover with a sloping coupé roof. BMW’s Sports Activity Coupé design pairs the raised stance of an X model with a sleeker silhouette. The X4 brought this shape to the middle of BMW’s X range.

The X4 extended BMW’s coupé-style X models into the mid-size class. Its second generation kept the same basic shape while bringing updated design and a broad range of engines.

BMW X4 generations

The first generation, F26, ran from 2014 to 2018. The second generation, G02, has been built since 2018.

Engines and power

EU versions from 2014 to 2025 span 2.0 to 3.0 litres and 120 kW (163 PS) to 375 kW (510 PS). The range includes petrol, diesel, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and other fuel classifications. The most registered EU entries include 2.0-litre diesels rated at 140 kW (190 PS).

UK versions span 2.0 to 3.0 litres and 140 kW (190 PS) to 375 kW (510 PS). US and Canadian versions in the listed figures have petrol engines from 2.0 to 3.0 litres.

How economical is the BMW X4?

The lowest listed EU consumption for petrol, diesel and hybrid versions is 5.3 L/100 km WLTP. The UK low is 4.9 L/100 km on NEDC. France’s 2026 entry is a 3.0-litre petrol version rated at 10.5 L/100 km WLTP. The best US combined result is 25 MPG, or 9.4 L/100 km on EPA; Canada lists 9.2 L/100 km on its 5-cycle test.

The test procedures differ. European figures may use WLTP or the older NEDC procedure, the US uses EPA, and Canada uses its 5-cycle procedure. EU registrations total 323,197 X4s across the period shown.

Where was the BMW X4 sold?

Figures are available for the EU, UK, France, the United States and Canada. The X4’s mid-size crossover shape was offered with engine sizes from 2.0 to 3.0 litres in the listed markets.

Official figures are measured on standard test procedures and differ between markets. Your consumption depends on how, where and in what conditions you drive.
