What is the Porsche Cayenne?
The Cayenne is Porsche’s large SUV, with a roomy cabin and a higher driving position. It brought the marque into a new kind of vehicle when it joined the 911 and Boxster as Porsche’s third model series. It suits drivers looking for an SUV shape with the road-focused character associated with the brand.
Porsche introduced the Cayenne in 2002. Its first generation featured Porsche Active Suspension Management, and later generations broadened the choice of engines and drivetrains. Across markets and years, the line-up has included petrol and diesel engines, hybrids and plug-in hybrids.
Porsche Cayenne generations
The first generation (2003–2010), code 9PA, established Porsche’s SUV. The second generation (2011–2018), code 92A, brought hybrid technology: the Cayenne’s series-production hybrid arrived in 2010, followed by a plug-in hybrid in 2014. The third generation (2019–today), code 9YA, continued to develop the chassis and construction while retaining the Cayenne’s blend of road performance and everyday practicality.
Engines, power and official economy
In EU registration figures, engine sizes range from 2.9 to 4.8 litres and power from 155 kW (211 PS) to 471 kW (640 PS). The lowest stated non-plug-in consumption is 8.9 L/100 km on WLTP. The plug-in hybrid’s weighted figure is 1.5 L/100 km WLTP, assuming some driving is electric.
The lowest stated figure is 3.3 L/100 km on NEDC in the UK. France’s figures cover 2012–2015 and list 6.6 L/100 km NEDC for non-plug-in versions and 3.4 L/100 km NEDC for plug-in hybrids. In the USA, the lowest stated figures are 9.8 L/100 km on the EPA test for non-plug-in versions and 10.7 L/100 km for plug-in hybrids. Canada lists 9.8 L/100 km and 10.6 L/100 km respectively on its 5-cycle test. WLTP and NEDC are European procedures; EPA and Canada’s 5-cycle method use different tests, so their results are not directly comparable.
Where is the Cayenne sold?
Official figures cover the European Union, the United Kingdom, France, the United States and Canada. EU registrations run from 2010 to 2025, and date ranges differ in other markets. The available powertrains vary by country: the EU and North American figures include plug-in hybrids, while UK figures include petrol, diesel and hybrid versions.
Questions and answers
