What is the Porsche 911?

The 911 is Porsche’s long-running sports car, with a low silhouette and a rear-mounted engine. Coupé, Targa and Cabriolet versions give the line-up different ways to enjoy the same distinctive layout. Its small rear seats add some flexibility for occasional use.

Porsche first showed the car as the 901, then launched it as the 911. The original paired a six-cylinder boxer engine with rear-engine packaging, a combination that remains central to the model’s identity. Over time, the 911 has grown into a broad range, from everyday-focused Carreras to more specialised performance models.

Porsche 911 generations

The generations listed here are the G-Series (1974–1989), 964 (1989–1994), 993 (1994–1998), 996 (1998–2005), 997 (2004–2012), 991 (2011–2019) and 992 (2019–today). The 996 marked a major technical shift from air-cooled to water-cooled engines. Later generations updated the car’s chassis, comfort and technology while keeping its rear-engine character. Hybrid power is now among the technologies offered in the 992 generation.

Engines, power and official economy

In EU registration figures, the 911 spans 3.0- to 4.0-litre engines and power from 257 kW (349 PS) to 497 kW (676 PS). Versions in the figures include petrol, hybrid and plug-in hybrid. The lowest stated non-plug-in consumption is 10.2 L/100 km on WLTP. The plug-in hybrid’s weighted figure is 10.6 L/100 km WLTP, assuming some driving is electric.

The lowest stated figure is 7.4 L/100 km on NEDC in the UK and 8.2 L/100 km on NEDC in France. In the USA, the EPA figure is 9.4 L/100 km, with a best combined rating of 25 MPG.
