What is the Porsche Boxster?

The Boxster is Porsche’s two-seat, mid-engined roadster. Its open body and central engine layout give it a distinct place in the company’s sports-car range. The name combines “boxer”, for the engine type, and “roadster”. The production car launched in 1996, drawing on Porsche’s mid-engined sports-car heritage, including the 550 Spyder and 718 RS 60 Spyder.

The first production generation was the 986. EU registrations cover 2010–2024, UK figures 2003–2016, French figures 2012–2015, US figures 1997–2020 and Canadian figures 1997–2019.

Boxster generations

The first generation, 986, ran from 1997–2004. It brought a water-cooled flat-six engine to Porsche’s production roadster range. The 987 followed from 2005–2012, with a new design and revised interior. The 981 ran from 2013–2016. The mid-engined layout remained central to the Boxster throughout these generations.

Engines and power

EU engine sizes range from 2.0 to 4.0 litres, with power from 155 kW (211 PS) to 360 kW (489 PS). UK engine figures cover 2.7 to 3.4 litres; the USA lists 2.0 to 3.8 litres, and Canada 2.0 to 3.4 litres. French figures show power from 195 kW (265 PS) to 243 kW (330 PS). Petrol is listed in the UK, France, USA and Canada; EU registrations also include electric and other categories.

How economical is the Porsche Boxster?

The lowest listed consumption is 7.7 L/100 km in both UK and French figures, measured on NEDC. The USA’s lowest figure is 9.4 L/100 km under EPA testing, with a best combined rating of 25 MPG. Canada lists 9.2 L/100 km under NRCan’s 5-cycle test. European NEDC procedures differ from the EPA test in the USA and the 5-cycle test in Canada, so the results are best read within each market.
