Reported March 31, 2004Model years 2003DVSA recall R/2004/0501 vehicle affected

A poor ground connection at the fuel filler may allow a charge to build up and, in rare cases, create a spark that ignites fuel vapour outside the filler neck. The ground connection will be inspected and reworked if necessary.

    Official DVSA recall text
    Component
FILLING THE FUEL TANK MAY CAUSE AN ELECTROSTATIC CHARGE
    Defect
There is a possibility that the ground connection between the thread of the tank filler neck and the connecting pipe to the fuel tank may not be sound which may result in an electrostatic charge which in rare cases could create a spark which could ignite fuel vapours in the area outside of the tank filler neck which could lead to a muffled detonation..

Reported February 18, 2004Model years 2004NHTSA campaign 04V0710004,099 vehicles affected

A transfer case housing change may cause the oil pump to rotate, starving internal gears of oil. Continued driving could fracture the housing, apply incorrect torque to the driven wheels, or allow oil to reach the tyres. Dealers will inspect the housing and replace the transfer case if needed.

    Official NHTSA recall text
    Component
    POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
    Defect
CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES MAY HAVE HAD A TRANSFER CASE INSTALLED THAT COULD, DUE TO CHANGES IN THE HOUSING CASTING, RESULT IN THE OIL PUMP ROTATION. SHOULD THIS OCCUR, OIL STARVATION OF THE INTERNAL GEARS MIGHT RESULT.
    Consequence

Reported February 18, 2004Model years 2003NHTSA campaign 04V06800035 vehicles affected

An inadequate ground connection at the fuel filler may allow a static charge to spark during refuelling and ignite fuel vapours. A startling detonation could lead to spilled fuel igniting and a fire. Dealers will inspect the ground connection and correct it if necessary.

    Official NHTSA recall text
    Component
FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY:FILLER PIPE AND CAP
    Defect
ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, IF THE GROUND CONNECTION BETWEEN THE SPIRAL RING OF THE TANK FILLER NECK AND THE CONNECTING PIPE TO THE FUEL TANK IS INADEQUATE, THE FLOW OF FUEL DURING REFUELING CAN CREATE AN ELECTROSTATIC CHARGE, WHICH COULD DISCHARGE AND SPARK. THIS SPARK COULD IGNITE FUEL VAPORS IN THE AREA OUTSIDE THE TANK FILLER NECK THAT COULD LEAD TO A MUFFLED DETONATION.
    Consequence
DUE TO SUCH A STARTLING EVENT, THE INDIVIDUAL REFUELING THE VEHICLE COULD REMOVE THE FUEL NOZZLE AT PRECISELY THE MOMENT OF THE DETONATION WITHOUT FIRST STOPPING THE FUELING PROCESS. IN SUCH A CIRCUMSTANCE, FUEL ESCAPING OUTSIDE OF THE FUEL TANK MAY IGNITE, RESULTING IN A FIRE.
    Remedy
DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE GROUND CONNECTION AND, IF NECESSARY, CORRECTED. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON MARCH 29, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT PORSCHE AT 1-800-545-8039.
