What is the BMW X5?
The BMW X5 is a large, five-door SUV that BMW calls a Sports Activity Vehicle. It combines a raised driving position and a roomy body with a road-focused character. It suits people who want space for everyday journeys and the ability to venture beyond paved roads.
Launched in 1999, the X5 introduced BMW’s X family. Its original concept paired all-wheel drive and off-road ability with the handling of a road car. Over the generations, the range has grown to include plug-in hybrid versions.
BMW X5 generations
The first generation, E53, ran from 1999 to 2006. The E70 followed from 2006 to 2013, then the F15 from 2013 to 2018. The G05 generation has been built since 2018. The model developed from a road-focused four-wheel-drive BMW into a broader range that includes plug-in hybrids.
Engines and power
In EU listings, engines range from 2.0 to 4.4 litres, with power from 110 kW (150 PS) to 460 kW (625 PS). In the UK, engines range from 2.0 to 4.8 litres and power from 219 kW (298 PS) to 460 kW (625 PS). The range has included petrol and diesel engines, hybrids and plug-in hybrids; EU listings also include other fuel types.
How economical is the BMW X5?
The lowest listed non-plug-in figure in the EU is 1.6 L/100 km on WLTP. The lowest plug-in hybrid figure is 0.9 L/100 km on WLTP. That is an official weighted figure which assumes some driving is electric, so it is not directly comparable with a petrol or diesel result.
Test results vary by market and procedure. The UK low is 5.3 L/100 km on NEDC for non-plug-in versions and 3.3 L/100 km for plug-in hybrids on NEDC. The USA lists 8.7 L/100 km under EPA testing; Canada lists 8.7 L/100 km under its 5-cycle procedure. WLTP and NEDC are European test procedures; the EPA and Canadian 5-cycle tests use different methods.
Where was the BMW X5 sold?
The X5 appears in listings for the EU, UK, France, the United States and Canada. EU registration figures span 2010–2025 and total 784,979. BMW introduced the first-generation X5 in 1999, launching the model that became the start of its X family.

Official figures are measured on standard test procedures and differ between markets. Your consumption depends on how, where and in what conditions you drive.
