What is the Mercedes-Benz GLS?
The GLS is Mercedes-Benz’s large SUV, with a three-row cabin and room for up to seven people. The maker has positioned it as the S-Class among SUVs, giving it a prominent place at the top of its SUV range.
The model began as the GL. The X166 generation ran from 2012–2019, and the GLS name arrived during that generation. The X167 followed from 2019, continuing the large SUV’s place in the Mercedes-Benz line-up.
Engines and power
The GLS has been offered with petrol, diesel and hybrid powertrains, as well as plug-in hybrid versions in the EU. EU figures span engines from 2.9 to 5.5 litres and power from 190 kW (258 PS) to 503 kW (684 PS). In the UK, the listed range is 2.9 to 5.5 litres and 243 kW (330 PS) to 612 kW (832 PS).
US figures list petrol and hybrid versions with engines from 3.0 to 5.5 litres; Canadian figures list petrol engines in the same size range. Engine and power choices vary by market.
How economical is the Mercedes-Benz GLS?
In EU WLTP figures, the lowest listed consumption for petrol, diesel and hybrid versions is 8.3 L/100 km. The lowest listed plug-in hybrid figure is 8.6 L/100 km, a weighted result that assumes some driving is electric. The UK’s lowest listed figure is 7.6 L/100 km under NEDC.
The lowest listed US figure is 11.2 L/100 km, or 21 MPG combined, on the EPA test. Canada’s lowest is 11 L/100 km on the NRCan 5-cycle test. These results use different procedures: WLTP and NEDC in Europe, EPA in the US and the 5-cycle procedure in Canada.
