What is the Land Rover Discovery?

The Discovery is a spacious SUV with a practical cabin and Land Rover’s all-terrain character. Its upright shape and available third row have made it a natural fit for families and people carrying passengers or everyday gear. Land Rover introduced it in 1989 as a more accessible, family-focused addition to its range. The early model’s stepped roof created extra headroom for a third row.

Discovery generations

The generations are Series I (1989–1998), Series II (1998–2004), Discovery 3 (2004–2009), Discovery 3 (LR3) (2005–2009) in North America, Discovery 4 (2009–2016), Discovery 4 (LR4) (2010–2016) in North America, and Discovery 5 (2017–today). Discovery 3 brought a modernised design and access to the third row through the side doors rather than the tailgate. Discovery 4 built on the model’s comfort and equipment, while Discovery 5 carried its spacious, family-focused character into a newer design.

Engines and power

In the EU, engine sizes range from 2.0 L to 3.7 L and power from 132 kW (179 PS) to 285 kW (387 PS). The UK range spans 2.0 L to 5.0 L, with power from 155 kW (210 PS) to 250 kW (340 PS). France’s figures run from 155 kW (211 PS) to 276 kW (375 PS). The US and Canada include engines from 2.0 L to 5.0 L. Petrol and diesel versions appear across the markets; EU and US figures also include hybrid versions.

Fuel consumption and CO₂

The lowest listed consumption for petrol, diesel and hybrid versions is 7.9 L/100 km on the EU’s WLTP test. The UK’s lowest listed figure is 6.3 L/100 km on NEDC, and France’s is 7.8 L/100 km on NEDC. The lowest listed figures are 10.2 L/100 km on the US EPA test and 10.4 L/100 km on Canada’s 5-cycle test. WLTP and NEDC in Europe, EPA in the US and the 5-cycle procedure in Canada use different methods, so figures are best compared within the same market. Official CO₂ figures depend on the engine and test procedure.

Where was the Discovery sold?

The Discovery appears in official figures for the EU, UK, France, the US and Canada. The year spans are 2010–2025 for EU registrations, 2000–2023 in the UK, 2012–2014 in France, 1994–2026 in the US and 1995–2026 in Canada. EU registration figures include many 3.0 L diesel versions, including entries rated at 188 kW (256 PS).

Questions and answers

How many seats does the Discovery offer?

The Discovery developed into a full-size SUV with a seven-seat identity. Land Rover describes the current family as a full seven-seat SUV.

What is the Discovery called in North America?

The third and fourth generations were known there as the LR3 and LR4, respectively.

Which test figures should I use to compare consumption?

Compare figures from the same market and procedure. European WLTP or NEDC, US EPA and Canada’s 5-cycle results use different methods.

Official figures are measured on standard test procedures and differ between markets. Your consumption depends on how, where and in what conditions you drive.
