What is the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG?

The SLS AMG was a two-seat sports car developed by Mercedes-Benz and AMG. It was offered as a coupé with gullwing doors and as an open roadster. Its long bonnet and roof-hinged doors recalled the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, while its aluminium spaceframe gave the car a modern construction.

The SLS generation, designated C197 for the coupé and R197 for the roadster, ran from 2010 to 2015. Its clean-sheet design and engineering made it a distinct AMG model.

Engines and power

The main SLS range used a 6.2 L petrol engine. Listed EU versions span 420 kW (571 PS) to 464 kW (631 PS), from the standard car to higher-output variants. French figures also include an electric version, and the listed power range there starts at 220 kW (299 PS).

How economical is the SLS AMG?

Official consumption figures vary by market and test procedure. The lowest UK result is 13.2 L/100 km on NEDC; France’s lowest listed result is 9.4 L/100 km, also on NEDC. The lowest US figure is 14.7 L/100 km under the EPA procedure, with a best combined rating of 16 MPG. Canada’s lowest listed result is 15 L/100 km on its 5-cycle test. European NEDC and WLTP, EPA and Canada’s 5-cycle procedures use different methods, so results across markets are not directly equivalent.

EU registration figures total 9,029 cars from 2010 to 2015. The leading listed entry was the 6.2 L petrol version rated at 420 kW (571 PS), with 3,002 registrations in 2011.

Where was the SLS AMG sold?

The SLS appears in official figures for the European Union, the United Kingdom, France, the United States and Canada, with different year spans in each market. Its gullwing doors and long bonnet gave the car a clear connection to Mercedes-Benz’s sports-car heritage, while AMG shaped its performance character.
