What it means
The current through pressure control solenoid J does not match the commanded value within tolerance. Coil resistance drift or high-resistance contact.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The TCM adjusts current to pressure control solenoid J to regulate hydraulic pressure during shifts. This code sets when the measured current or response falls outside the expected range for the command, which can result from coil or wiring resistance drift, a poor connection, or a hydraulic fault affecting the valve’s response.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Solenoid coil or wiring fault
- Poor connection at the solenoid connector
- Hydraulic or valve-body fault affecting solenoid response
Symptoms
- Check-engine or transmission warning light
- Harsh or delayed shifts
- Transmission may slip or hesitate
- Transmission may enter limp mode
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare solenoid J’s command with available current and pressure response data to identify when the mismatch occurs.
- Inspect the solenoid J connector and harness for corrosion, looseness, damaged insulation, or signs of heat or fluid intrusion.
- Measure solenoid J coil resistance and circuit voltage drop using the vehicle maker’s procedure, comparing results with the manufacturer’s specification.
- Check the control wiring for high resistance or intermittent contact, including at the TCM and solenoid connectors.
- If the electrical values are within specification, investigate whether solenoid J or the valve body is responding hydraulically as commanded.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure the solenoid J connector or repair damaged terminals.
- Repair high-resistance or damaged wiring in the solenoid J circuit.
- Replace solenoid J if its coil resistance or response is outside the manufacturer’s specification.
- Repair the valve body if electrical operation is correct but hydraulic response remains out of range.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving and avoid towing or hard acceleration while shifts are harsh or slipping. Continued slipping can overheat and damage the transmission, and the vehicle may enter limp mode.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
