What it means
The control module detects a voltage below the expected range in the pressure control solenoid J control circuit. Possible causes include a short to ground or a solenoid or wiring fault.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The TCM controls pressure control solenoid J by switching its circuit to regulate transmission pressure. This code sets when the circuit voltage is lower than expected, which can happen if the control wire is shorted to ground, the solenoid coil is internally shorted, or a corroded connection disrupts the circuit.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Control wire shorted to ground
- Internal short in solenoid coil
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check-engine or transmission warning light
- Harsh or delayed shifts
- Transmission may slip or hesitate
- Transmission may enter limp mode
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and check for related transmission circuit codes that may indicate a shared power, ground, or harness issue.
- Inspect solenoid J’s connector and wiring for corrosion, moisture, damaged insulation, or contact with ground points.
- Measure solenoid J coil resistance and check the circuit for a short to ground using the vehicle maker’s procedure; compare results with the manufacturer’s specification.
- Check voltage and resistance across the control wiring and connector terminals to locate a short or poor connection, isolating the solenoid and TCM as specified.
- If the wiring and coil pass, test the TCM output using the service procedure before considering a module fault.
Common fixes
- Clean corroded solenoid J connector terminals and restore a secure connection.
- Repair control wiring that is shorted to ground or has damaged insulation.
- Replace solenoid J if its coil is internally shorted or outside the specified resistance range.
- Repair the TCM output if testing confirms it is pulling the circuit voltage low.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid towing and strenuous driving, and limit use if shifts are harsh or the transmission slips. A low circuit signal can prevent pressure control and lead to transmission damage; stop if the vehicle cannot shift or maintain drive.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
