OBD-II fault code

P281C: Pressure Control Solenoid H Control Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The current through pressure control solenoid H does not match the commanded value within tolerance. Coil resistance drift or high-resistance contact.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Pressure control solenoid H regulates hydraulic pressure when the control module adjusts its command. P281C sets when the current through H or its resulting response falls outside the expected range, which can point to coil drift, a poor connection, or a hydraulic fault affecting H's operation.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Solenoid coil or wiring fault
  2. Poor connection at the solenoid connector
  3. Hydraulic or valve-body fault affecting solenoid response

Symptoms

  • Check-engine or transmission warning light
  • Harsh or delayed shifts
  • Transmission may slip or hesitate
  • Transmission may enter limp mode

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and related transmission codes to identify the conditions under which H's current or response fell out of range.
  2. Inspect H's connector and wiring for corrosion, loose terminals, chafing, or other high-resistance connections.
  3. Measure solenoid H coil resistance and compare it with the manufacturer's specification.
  4. Use scan-tool data to compare the command to H with available current, pressure, and shift-response data.
  5. Test the H control wiring for excessive resistance or intermittent continuity using the manufacturer's circuit procedure.
  6. If electrical tests pass but H's pressure response remains out of range, inspect the solenoid and valve body for sticking or wear.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure a high-resistance or loose H connector.
  • Repair damaged H wiring or terminals that cause excessive resistance.
  • Replace solenoid H if its coil is outside specification or responds inconsistently.
  • Service the valve body if H's hydraulic response remains abnormal after electrical faults are corrected.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid heavy loads and long trips because an out-of-range H response can cause slipping, harsh shifts, and excess transmission heat. Stop if the vehicle loses drive or shifting becomes unpredictable.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
