What it means
The TCM detects an open circuit in the control wiring of pressure control solenoid J. No current flows when the solenoid is commanded.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The TCM sends current through the control circuit to operate pressure control solenoid J, which regulates transmission pressure. This code sets when the circuit is open and current cannot flow as commanded, due to a break in the wiring, an open solenoid coil, or a terminal that has backed out.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open in solenoid control wire
- Open solenoid coil
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
Symptoms
- Check-engine or transmission warning light
- Harsh or delayed shifts
- Transmission may slip or hesitate
- Transmission may enter limp mode
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and check for other transmission electrical codes that could help locate a shared wiring or connector problem.
- Inspect solenoid J’s connector for a backed-out pin, loose fit, corrosion, or damage, and check the harness for a break or chafe.
- Measure solenoid J coil resistance and compare it with the manufacturer’s specification to determine whether the coil itself is open.
- With the solenoid and TCM isolated as directed by service information, check continuity through the control wire and inspect for an open between the connectors.
- If the wiring and solenoid pass, check the TCM connector and output using the vehicle maker’s circuit test procedure.
Common fixes
- Re-seat a backed-out solenoid J terminal and secure the connector.
- Repair or replace the broken section of solenoid J control wiring.
- Replace solenoid J if its coil is open.
- Repair the TCM connector or output if circuit tests identify it as the source of the open.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid towing and hard acceleration, and limit driving because solenoid J cannot be controlled normally. If the transmission slips, loses drive, or enters limp mode, stop in a safe place and arrange repair.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
