What it means
The control module detects a voltage below the expected range in the pressure control solenoid H control circuit. Possible causes include a short to ground or a solenoid or wiring fault.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Pressure control solenoid H controls hydraulic pressure through an electrical circuit monitored by the transmission control module. P281D sets when circuit voltage is below the expected range, which can result from a short to ground, an internally shorted coil, or a poor connection.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Control wire shorted to ground
- Internal short in solenoid coil
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check-engine or transmission warning light
- Harsh or delayed shifts
- Transmission may slip or hesitate
- Transmission may enter limp mode
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and transmission codes to see when the H circuit low condition occurred and whether it coincided with a shift problem.
- Inspect solenoid H's connector and harness for damaged insulation, pinched wiring, corrosion, or signs of contact with ground.
- Check for corroded or loose connector terminals that could create high resistance in the H circuit.
- With the circuit isolated as specified by the manufacturer, measure solenoid H coil resistance against the manufacturer's specification.
- Test the H control wire for a short to ground using the manufacturer's wiring diagram and isolation procedure.
- If wiring and coil tests pass, compare the H command with available transmission pressure or shift-response data for a separate hydraulic issue.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure corroded or loose H connector terminals.
- Repair the H control wire if it is shorted to ground or its insulation is damaged.
- Replace solenoid H if its coil is internally shorted or outside specification.
- Repair damaged connector pins or wiring that cause excessive resistance.
Can I keep driving?
Keep driving to a minimum because the H circuit may not regulate pressure correctly, causing slipping or harsh shifts that can damage the transmission. Avoid towing or hard acceleration, and stop if the vehicle loses drive.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
