What it means
The TCM detects an open circuit in the control wiring of pressure control solenoid H. No current flows when the solenoid is commanded.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Pressure control solenoid H uses an electrical control circuit to regulate pressure in its assigned transmission passage. P281B sets when the transmission control module detects an open H circuit and cannot pass the expected current, which can result from a broken wire, open coil, or backed-out connector pin.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open in solenoid control wire
- Open solenoid coil
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
Symptoms
- Check-engine or transmission warning light
- Harsh or delayed shifts
- Transmission may slip or hesitate
- Transmission may enter limp mode
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and related transmission codes to confirm when the H circuit open was detected.
- Inspect solenoid H's connector for a pin pushed back into the housing, a loose latch, corrosion, or damaged wiring.
- Check continuity through the H circuit using the manufacturer's wiring diagram and specified isolation procedure.
- Measure solenoid H coil resistance and compare it with the manufacturer's specification to identify an open coil.
- If the coil and harness appear intact, check connector pin fit and continuity through each connection in the H circuit.
- After repairs, clear the code and verify that the module can command H without the open-circuit fault returning.
Common fixes
- Reseat the backed-out H connector pin and secure the connector.
- Repair an open or broken wire in the solenoid H control circuit.
- Replace solenoid H if its coil is open.
- Repair corroded or loose terminals that interrupt continuity in the H circuit.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving because the transmission may not regulate pressure through the H circuit, leading to harsh shifts or slipping. Avoid towing, and stop if drive is lost or the transmission shifts unpredictably.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
