What it means
Shift solenoid J is commanded on but does not engage the corresponding gear element.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Shift solenoid J is an electrically operated valve in the transmission that directs hydraulic pressure to a gear element. The transmission control module (TCM) commands the solenoid on and checks whether the expected gear or hydraulic response follows; this code sets when that response is missing, as if the valve were stuck closed or its feed were blocked.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Solenoid spool stuck closed
- Hydraulic feed blocked
- Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Read the transmission codes and freeze-frame data, then compare commanded gear and solenoid J status with the reported shift problem.
- Check transmission fluid level and condition using the vehicle’s specified procedure, since low or contaminated fluid can disrupt the hydraulic response.
- Inspect the transmission connector, solenoid J wiring, and accessible valve-body area for damage or signs of contamination.
- Use scan-tool data or an approved active test to see whether the TCM commands solenoid J on and whether gear or pressure data responds.
- If the electrical command is present but the expected response is absent, test solenoid J and its hydraulic feed against the manufacturer’s specification; inspect the valve body for a stuck spool or blockage.
Common fixes
- Correct the transmission fluid level or service contaminated fluid as specified for the vehicle.
- Repair damaged wiring or clean and secure a poor connector at the solenoid J circuit.
- Remove debris or a restriction from the hydraulic feed if inspection confirms a blockage.
- Clean or replace a solenoid J valve that is stuck closed.
- Repair valve-body wear or damage if it prevents solenoid J from applying the gear element.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid hard acceleration, towing, and long trips; a missing shift can lead to slipping, excess heat, or loss of drive. If the transmission slips badly, shifts unpredictably, or enters limp mode, stop somewhere safe and arrange service.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
