OBD-II fault code

P08D3: Shift Solenoid J Control Circuit High

What it means

Voltage on the shift solenoid J control line is above the expected window. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Shift solenoid J is an electrically operated valve, and the TCM monitors voltage on its control line to confirm the circuit responds as expected. This high-circuit code sets when that voltage exceeds its expected window, which may happen if the control wire is shorted to battery power, the coil is open, or a connection has excessive resistance.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Control wire shorted to B+
  2. Open solenoid coil
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Read transmission codes and freeze-frame data, noting solenoid J command and any voltage readings when the code set.
  2. Inspect the solenoid J wiring for contact with battery-positive wiring, damaged insulation, moisture, and corroded or loose terminals.
  3. Using the wiring diagram and the specified test procedure, check whether the control line stays high when the TCM commands solenoid J off.
  4. Measure solenoid J coil resistance and check the control wire for an open circuit, comparing results with the manufacturer’s specification.
  5. If the wiring and coil pass, test the TCM output circuit under an approved procedure to identify a driver fault.

Common fixes

  • Repair a control wire shorted to battery power.
  • Clean or repair a corroded, loose, or high-resistance solenoid J connection.
  • Replace solenoid J if its coil is open or outside the manufacturer’s specification.
  • Repair the TCM output circuit if testing confirms it is holding the control line high.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid towing, heavy loads, and hard acceleration because solenoid J may fail to change the gear element as commanded. If the transmission enters limp mode, slips, or shifts unpredictably, stop safely and arrange service.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
