OBD-II fault code

P08D6: Shift Solenoid K Performance/Stuck Off

What it means

Shift solenoid K is commanded on but does not engage the corresponding gear element.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Shift solenoid K is a transmission valve that directs hydraulic pressure to engage a gear element when commanded. The TCM sets this performance/stuck-off code when it commands solenoid K on but does not see the expected engagement, which can indicate a stuck-closed spool or a blocked hydraulic feed.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Solenoid spool stuck closed
  2. Hydraulic feed blocked
  3. Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Read transmission codes and freeze-frame data, comparing the commanded gear and solenoid K state with the shift that failed.
  2. Check transmission fluid level and condition using the specified procedure, since inadequate or contaminated fluid can prevent the required pressure response.
  3. Inspect the solenoid K connector, wiring, and accessible valve-body area for damage, fluid intrusion, or contamination.
  4. Use scan-tool data or an approved active test to confirm that solenoid K receives an on command and check whether gear or pressure data responds.
  5. If the electrical command is present but engagement is missing, test solenoid K and its hydraulic feed against the manufacturer’s specification and inspect for a stuck spool or blockage.

Common fixes

  • Correct the fluid level or condition if it does not meet the vehicle’s service requirements.
  • Repair damaged wiring or a poor connection at solenoid K.
  • Clear a confirmed obstruction in solenoid K’s hydraulic feed.
  • Clean or replace a solenoid K valve that is stuck closed.
  • Repair valve-body wear or damage if it prevents the gear element from engaging.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid towing, hard acceleration, and long trips because the commanded gear may not engage, causing slipping, heat, or limp mode. If the transmission slips badly or loses drive, stop safely and arrange service.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
