What it means
The transmission control module monitors the electrical operation of shift solenoid J. It sets this code when the circuit signal or solenoid operation becomes inconsistent intermittently.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Shift solenoid J is an electrically controlled transmission valve that directs pressure during gear changes. The TCM monitors its electrical operation over time; this code sets when the circuit or solenoid works inconsistently, often because a connector contact opens or changes with vibration.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Connector not fully seated
- Coil resistance marginal
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Read transmission codes and freeze-frame data, recording when the fault occurred and the solenoid J command or status at that moment.
- Inspect the solenoid J connector for incomplete seating, corrosion, fluid entry, weak pin grip, or a pin pushed back in the housing.
- Check the harness routing for rubbing or tension, then see whether gently moving the stationary harness reproduces the fault or changes scan-tool readings.
- Measure solenoid J coil resistance and circuit continuity while checking for changes during careful harness movement; compare with the manufacturer’s specification.
- If the wiring and coil remain stable, monitor the circuit during an approved active test to isolate an intermittent solenoid or TCM output.
Common fixes
- Seat and secure the solenoid J connector fully.
- Clean or repair corroded, loose, or pushed-back connector terminals.
- Repair chafed wiring or secure a harness that moves against the transmission.
- Replace solenoid J if its coil reading is intermittent or outside the manufacturer’s specification.
- Repair the TCM output circuit if testing isolates the intermittent fault there.
Can I keep driving?
Use caution and avoid long trips, towing, and hard acceleration because the fault may return suddenly and disrupt a shift or trigger limp mode. If shifts become harsh, delayed, or unpredictable, stop safely and arrange service.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
