What it means
The transmission control module monitors the electrical circuit for shift solenoid J. It sets this code when the circuit has an electrical fault, such as an unexpected voltage or current.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Shift solenoid J is an electrical valve that the transmission control module uses to route hydraulic pressure for a gear change. The TCM monitors the solenoid J circuit for expected electrical operation; this code sets when the measured voltage or current indicates an electrical fault, even if the valve itself has not been proven mechanically stuck.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Internal solenoid fault
- Wiring or connector fault
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Read transmission codes and freeze-frame data, including solenoid J command and any available circuit or current readings.
- Inspect the transmission connector and solenoid J wiring for loose or corroded pins, damaged insulation, fluid intrusion, or a poor ground or supply connection.
- Check whether the fault returns with the harness stationary and note any related codes that point to a shared power or ground issue.
- Measure solenoid J coil resistance and circuit continuity with the system safely isolated, then compare results with the manufacturer’s specification.
- If wiring and coil checks pass, use the vehicle’s wiring information and approved test procedure to verify the TCM output and circuit under command.
Common fixes
- Reconnect, clean, or repair a loose or corroded solenoid J connector.
- Repair damaged wiring or a faulty supply or ground in the solenoid J circuit.
- Replace solenoid J if its coil fails the manufacturer’s specification.
- Repair the TCM output circuit only if testing confirms the module is producing the electrical fault.
Can I keep driving?
Keep trips short and gentle only if shifts remain predictable; avoid towing and heavy acceleration because an electrical fault can disable shifting or trigger limp mode. Stop driving if the transmission slips or loses drive.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
