What it means
Shift solenoid L is commanded on but does not engage the corresponding gear element.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Shift solenoid L directs hydraulic pressure to a transmission gear element when the TCM commands it on. This code sets when the TCM requests solenoid L to engage but the expected electrical or transmission response does not occur, consistent with a stuck valve, blocked hydraulic feed, or other failure to engage.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Solenoid spool stuck closed
- Hydraulic feed blocked
- Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Capture freeze-frame data and verify that solenoid L was commanded on when the fault occurred.
- Review live data for solenoid L command and gear or pressure feedback to confirm the expected element did not engage.
- Inspect the solenoid L connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, fluid intrusion, or a loose terminal.
- Test solenoid L coil and control circuit operation against the manufacturer's specifications.
- If electrical operation checks out, inspect the valve body and hydraulic feed for a sticking solenoid L spool or blockage.
Common fixes
- Repair damaged wiring or poor connector contact in the solenoid L circuit.
- Clear debris or service the valve body if the solenoid L hydraulic feed is obstructed.
- Replace solenoid L if it is stuck closed or fails its operating test.
- Repair the TCM output circuit if it does not deliver the commanded signal to solenoid L.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving if the transmission slips, misses shifts, or shudders, since the gear element controlled by solenoid L may not engage and continued use can cause damage. If it enters limp mode or loses drive, stop in a safe place and arrange assistance.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
