What it means
Shift solenoid E is electrically intact but does not engage hydraulically — associated clutch or band does not lock up.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Shift solenoid E directs fluid to apply a particular transmission clutch or band. This code sets when the solenoid circuit appears electrically intact but the expected hydraulic engagement does not occur after E is commanded, leaving the shift element unable to lock as expected.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Solenoid stuck closed
- Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
- Component wear with age - mechanical play
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and review commanded gear, actual gear, and input and output speeds to identify when the expected E-controlled engagement failed.
- Check transmission fluid level and condition using the manufacturer’s procedure, because low or contaminated fluid can prevent the shift element from applying.
- Inspect the transmission connector and solenoid E wiring for damage, corrosion, fluid intrusion, or loose terminals.
- Use a scan tool to command solenoid E if supported and compare the transmission response with the manufacturer’s expected shift behavior.
- If the electrical command is present but engagement is absent, test solenoid E and its hydraulic passage, then assess the associated clutch or band.
Common fixes
- Correct the fluid level or service contaminated fluid as specified.
- Repair damaged wiring or clean and secure the transmission connector.
- Clean or replace shift solenoid E if it is sticking or blocked.
- Repair a restricted hydraulic passage or worn clutch or band if testing confirms an internal engagement fault.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid towing, hard acceleration, and extended driving if the transmission slips or misses shifts; repeated slip can overheat and damage the transmission. Stop if the vehicle cannot shift predictably.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
