What it means
Shift solenoid H is electrically intact but does not engage hydraulically when commanded — corresponding clutch or band does not lock up.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Shift solenoid H directs transmission fluid to operate a particular clutch or band. The transmission control module compares the commanded shift with gear and speed data; this code sets when the H circuit appears electrically intact but the expected hydraulic engagement does not occur.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Solenoid stuck closed by debris
- Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
- Component wear with age - mechanical play
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Use a scan tool to save freeze-frame data and check commanded gear, actual gear, and transmission input and output speeds when the fault occurred.
- Check the transmission fluid level and condition using the vehicle maker’s specified procedure, since low or contaminated fluid can prevent solenoid H from applying pressure.
- Inspect the transmission connector and wiring for fluid intrusion, corrosion, damage, or loose terminals that could affect solenoid H.
- With a scan tool, command solenoid H if supported and compare the resulting shift and speed changes with the manufacturer’s expected response.
- If the electrical command is present but the expected engagement is absent, test solenoid H and its hydraulic passage, then assess the associated clutch or band for wear or damage.
Common fixes
- Correct the fluid level or service contaminated fluid as specified for the vehicle.
- Repair damaged wiring or clean and secure the transmission connector.
- Remove debris or repair a sticking shift solenoid H if testing confirms it is not moving freely.
- Repair the affected hydraulic passage or worn clutch or band if solenoid H operates but engagement still fails.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid towing, hard acceleration, and continued driving if shifts are delayed, slipping, or missing; the transmission may overheat and suffer further damage. If the vehicle cannot shift predictably, stop driving and arrange recovery.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
