What it means
Shift solenoid J stays activated when commanded off. Gear element remains engaged.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Shift solenoid J is an electrically operated transmission valve that controls hydraulic pressure to a gear element. The TCM monitors whether that element releases after it commands the solenoid off; this code sets when the element appears to remain engaged, which can happen if the valve spool is stuck open or the driver keeps energizing it.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Solenoid spool stuck open
- TCM output driver stuck on
- Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Read transmission codes and freeze-frame data, noting the commanded state of solenoid J and the gear present when the fault occurred.
- Check transmission fluid level and condition by the vehicle’s specified procedure, since fluid problems can affect valve movement and gear release.
- Inspect solenoid J’s connector and harness for loose pins, corrosion, damage, or contact with power wiring.
- Compare the TCM command for solenoid J with available current or status data during an approved scan-tool test to see whether it remains active when commanded off.
- If the electrical command turns off but the gear element stays engaged, test the solenoid and inspect the valve body for a stuck-open spool or debris.
Common fixes
- Correct the fluid level or condition if it is outside the vehicle’s service requirements.
- Repair a damaged connector or harness that is keeping the solenoid circuit energized.
- Clean or replace solenoid J if its spool sticks in the open position.
- Repair the TCM output driver if testing confirms it continues to energize solenoid J when commanded off.
- Clean or repair the valve body if debris or wear prevents the gear element from releasing.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving and avoid towing or rapid acceleration because a gear element that stays engaged can cause harsh shifts, slipping, or overheating. If the vehicle is stuck in a gear or shifts unpredictably, stop safely and arrange service.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
