OBD-II fault code

P08CC: Shift Solenoid J

What it means

A general fault in shift solenoid J. Affects gear engagement timing or pressure.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Shift solenoid J directs hydraulic flow used to engage or release transmission elements during gear changes. The TCM sets this general fault when solenoid J's electrical or operating response is abnormal, which can disturb the timing or pressure of the shifts it controls.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Solenoid failed
  2. Worn valve body

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record all transmission codes and freeze-frame data, then note which gear change or solenoid J command was active when the fault occurred.
  2. Check transmission fluid level and condition using the vehicle's specified procedure, since low or contaminated fluid can affect shift operation.
  3. Inspect shift solenoid J's connector and harness for loose pins, corrosion, fluid intrusion, or chafing.
  4. Use a supported scan-tool actuator test to command shift solenoid J and observe the shift or hydraulic response.
  5. Check solenoid J circuit continuity and coil resistance against the manufacturer's specification, then inspect the valve body if electrical checks pass but shifts remain abnormal.

Common fixes

  • Correct the fluid level or service contaminated fluid and filter as specified.
  • Repair a damaged or corroded shift solenoid J connector or wiring.
  • Replace shift solenoid J if it fails the specified electrical or actuator test.
  • Repair the valve body if wear or sticking prevents solenoid J from directing hydraulic flow correctly.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid towing or hard acceleration if shifts are harsh, delayed, slipping, or the transmission enters limp mode. Continuing to drive through poor gear engagement can damage clutches and other transmission components.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
