OBD-II fault code

P08D2: Shift Solenoid J Control Circuit Low

What it means

Voltage on the shift solenoid J control line is below the expected window. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Shift solenoid J is controlled through an electrical line that the TCM monitors while commanding the transmission valve. This low-circuit code sets when the control-line voltage is below its expected window, which can result from a short to ground, a shorted coil, or a poor high-resistance connection.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Control wire shorted to ground
  2. Coil shorted internally
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Read transmission codes and freeze-frame data, including solenoid J command and any available circuit voltage or current readings.
  2. Inspect the solenoid J harness for rubbed-through insulation, contact with grounded metal, moisture, and damaged or corroded connector pins.
  3. With the fault present and using the vehicle’s wiring diagram, check whether the control line is being pulled low and whether moving the harness changes the reading.
  4. Test solenoid J coil resistance and the control wire for an unintended path to ground, following the manufacturer’s isolation and test procedure.
  5. If the harness and coil pass, verify the TCM output circuit under an approved test before considering a module fault.

Common fixes

  • Repair a control wire shorted to ground.
  • Clean or replace corroded connector terminals that create excessive resistance.
  • Replace solenoid J if its coil is shorted or outside the manufacturer’s specification.
  • Repair the TCM output circuit if testing confirms the low voltage originates there.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving and avoid towing or hard acceleration because solenoid J may not control the gear element correctly, and the transmission may enter limp mode. Stop if the vehicle slips, shifts unpredictably, or loses drive.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
