What is the Mazda CX-5?

The CX-5 is a compact crossover SUV with a higher-riding stance and a practical cabin for everyday family use. It is a central model in Mazda’s SUV range. Launched in 2012, it was the first production Mazda to bring together the full range of Skyactiv technologies and the Kodo design theme, covering its engines, transmissions, body and chassis.

CX-5 generations

The first generation (KE) ran from 2012–2016. The second generation (KF) has been built since 2017. The model retained its compact SUV role as its design and engineering evolved. Its range has included petrol and diesel engines, as well as hybrid-labelled versions in the EU and UK listings.

Engines, power and economy

European versions cover 2.0 L to 2.5 L engines and 110 kW (150 PS) to 212 kW (288 PS), with hybrid, petrol, diesel and other fuel types represented. The UK range also spans 2.0 L to 2.5 L, with power from 104 kW (141 PS) to 184 kW (250 PS). French listings focus on 2.2 L engines, with 110 kW (150 PS) to 135 kW (184 PS). US and Canadian versions list 2.0 L to 2.5 L engines, including petrol and diesel.

The lowest EU consumption listed is 5.8 L/100 km under WLTP. The UK and French minimum figures are both 4.6 L/100 km under NEDC. The US EPA minimum is 8.1 L/100 km, with 29 MPG combined as the best rating; Canada’s NRCan 5-cycle minimum is 8 L/100 km. WLTP and NEDC procedures in Europe differ from the EPA test in the US and the 5-cycle test in Canada, so the figures are not directly comparable.
