What is the Lexus RX?

The Lexus RX is a luxury crossover SUV, combining a raised driving position with a comfortable cabin. It sits above the smaller NX in Lexus’s SUV range. Lexus introduced the RX in 1998, helping establish the luxury crossover category.

The RX has five generations: XU10 (1999–2003), XU30 (2004–2009), AL10 (2010–2015), AL20 (2016–2022) and AL30 (2023–today). Its range has grown from petrol choices to include hybrid and plug-in hybrid power. The fifth generation continued the RX’s long association with hybrid technology and brought a plug-in hybrid option to the lineup.

Engines and power

The range varies by market and model year. EU registrations cover 2.0 L to 3.5 L engines and outputs from 136 kW (185 PS) to 263 kW (358 PS). In the UK, the listed range is also 2.0 L to 3.5 L, with power from 140 kW (190 PS) to 371 kW (504 PS). France’s listed versions use 3.5 L engines, with outputs from 183 kW (249 PS) to 204 kW (277 PS).

The USA and Canada list engines from 2.4 L to 3.5 L. Petrol and hybrid versions appear across the markets, along with plug-in hybrids in some market listings.

How economical is the Lexus RX?

The lowest listed conventional petrol, diesel or hybrid consumption in the EU is 6.3 L/100 km on WLTP. Its lowest plug-in hybrid figure is 1 L/100 km on WLTP. This weighted result assumes some driving is electric. The UK’s lowest conventional figure is 5.2 L/100 km on NEDC; its plug-in hybrid figure is 7 L/100 km on WLTP.

For the USA, the lowest conventional figure is 6.5 L/100 km under EPA testing, and the best combined rating is 36 MPG. Canada’s lowest conventional result is 6.5 L/100 km on the 5-cycle test. Test procedures differ: European ratings use WLTP or, for older results, NEDC; the USA uses EPA testing, and Canada uses its 5-cycle test.

Where was the Lexus RX sold?

The RX appears in official figures for the EU, the UK, France, the USA and Canada. EU registration figures cover 2010–2025 and total 162,169. UK, US and Canadian listings reach back to 1999, while France’s begin in 2012. EU registrations include substantial numbers of 3.5 L petrol versions.
