What is the Infiniti M?

The Infiniti M was a range of premium cars, best known in its later generations as a large luxury sedan. Its early form was a coupe and convertible, before the name moved to sedans. The M sat among Infiniti’s more spacious passenger cars, with a focus on comfort and powerful engines.

The first generation (F31, 1990–1992) was sold in the US. The second (Y34, 2003–2004) and third (Y50, 2006–2010) were sold in the US and Canada. The fourth generation (Y51, 2011–2013) also reached Europe, the UK and France. The M name later became Q70 as Infiniti changed its naming system.

Engines and power

Engine choices varied by generation and market. US versions span 3.0 to 5.6 litres, while Canadian versions span 3.5 to 5.6 litres. The later European range covered 3.0 to 3.7 litres, with power from 175 kW (238 PS) to 235 kW (320 PS). It included petrol and diesel engines, as well as a hybrid in French listings. US versions also included a hybrid; Canadian versions listed here are petrol-powered.

EU registrations show the 3.5-litre petrol at 225 kW (306 PS) among the leading configurations, alongside the 3.0-litre diesel at 175 kW (238 PS).

How economical is the Infiniti M?

The lowest listed consumption is 6.9 L/100 km in UK and French NEDC figures. US EPA results give a lowest figure of 8.1 L/100 km and a best combined result of 29 MPG. Canada’s lowest result is also 8.1 L/100 km, on the 5-cycle test. These procedures differ, so the results are best considered separately by market.

The M recorded 3,074 EU registrations from 2010 to 2015. UK and French listings cover 2012–2013; US figures span 1990–2013 and include earlier M generations.
