What is the Acura RDX?

The RDX is a five-seat luxury compact SUV, with the higher seating position and everyday usefulness of an SUV. It sits below the larger MDX in Acura’s range and gives families a smaller, road-focused option for daily drives and longer trips. Honda launched Acura as a luxury and performance brand in North America, and the RDX joined the lineup in 2007.

RDX generations

The first generation ran from 2007 to 2012. It introduced the RDX with a turbocharged engine and Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system. The second generation followed from 2013 to 2018, switching to a V6 engine. The third generation began in 2019, with a new design, a turbocharged four-cylinder and a ten-speed automatic transmission. Its available SH-AWD system also gained a newer torque-vectoring design.

Engines and fuel consumption

Across the United States and Canada, the RDX has been offered with petrol engines ranging from 2.0 to 3.5 litres. The engine depends on the year and version: the model began with a turbocharged four-cylinder, moved to a V6 for its second generation, then returned to a turbocharged four-cylinder for its third.

In the United States, the highest listed combined rating is 24 mpg under EPA testing, and the lowest listed consumption is 9.8 L/100 km. In Canada, the lowest listed figure is 9.9 L/100 km on the NRCan five-cycle test. The EPA and Canadian five-cycle procedures differ, so their results are best understood within each market.
