What is the Acura MDX?
The MDX is Acura’s three-row SUV, designed to carry families and other groups with room for several passengers. Its upright body and taller seating position give it the familiar feel of a family SUV. It joined Acura’s lineup as a 2001 model.
Acura is Honda’s premium brand. The MDX helped define its SUV range, bringing three-row seating to a crossover with a car-like body structure.
MDX generations
The first generation ran from 2001 to 2006, the second from 2007 to 2013, and the third from 2014 to 2020. The fourth generation began in 2022 and continues today. The MDX has kept its three-row layout through those changes, while each generation brought updated styling and engineering. The third-generation redesign introduced a new body and chassis, with a focus on lower weight and greater rigidity.
Engines, power and fuel consumption
The US and Canadian lineups span petrol engines from 3.0 L to 3.7 L. The US lineup also includes hybrid versions, while the Canadian lineup lists petrol versions. Engine size alone does not describe a version’s full performance.
In the United States, the best combined EPA rating is 27 MPG, and the lowest listed consumption is 8.7 L/100 km. Canada’s lowest listed figure is 9 L/100 km on the NRCan 5-cycle test. These procedures differ, so their results are best understood in their respective markets. The MDX is listed in both countries from 2001 through 2026. European figures, where available, use WLTP or older NEDC testing; US figures use EPA testing and Canadian figures use the 5-cycle procedure.
