What it means
The gear lever position sensor D reports a circuit low fault. Selector position cannot be measured reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Gear lever position sensor D sends a signal used by the transmission control system to identify the selected gear. P2E0E sets when the module sees sensor D's circuit voltage too low, which can be caused by a failed sensor or a high-resistance connection such as corroded terminals.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Position sensor failed
- Wiring or connector fault
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check-engine or transmission warning light
- Incorrect gear indication
- Difficulty selecting or engaging a gear
How to diagnose it
- Capture freeze-frame data and monitor sensor D's live signal to confirm the low reading and the conditions when it occurs.
- With the vehicle safely parked, compare the indicated gear with the lever position and note any positions that are not recognized.
- Inspect sensor D's connector for corrosion, moisture, loose or spread pins, and check the harness for damage.
- Use the wiring diagram to check the signal, supply, and ground circuits for excessive resistance, opens, or shorts to ground.
- Compare sensor output and circuit readings with the manufacturer's specification to determine whether the sensor or its wiring is responsible.
Common fixes
- Reconnect the sensor D connector securely and protect the harness from further damage.
- Clean or repair corroded terminals and replace damaged connector parts as needed.
- Repair a short to ground, open, or high-resistance wire in the sensor D circuit.
- Replace sensor D if its output remains low with sound connections and wiring.
Can I keep driving?
A low sensor D signal can make the gear indication unreliable or interfere with gear selection, and the transmission may enter limp mode. Do not drive if engagement is uncertain; if it still shifts normally, keep driving limited and have the circuit checked soon.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
