OBD-II fault code

P2E06: Gear Lever Position Sensor B Circuit Low

What it means

The gear lever position sensor B reports a circuit low fault. Selector position cannot be measured reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Gear lever position sensor B sends a selector-position signal to the transmission control system. P2E06 sets when the sensor B circuit voltage falls below the expected range, which may be caused by a short to ground, poor terminal contact, or a failed sensor. The low-circuit fault is specific to sensor B and differs from its high-circuit and range/performance codes.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Position sensor failed
  2. Wiring or connector fault
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check-engine or transmission warning light
  • Incorrect gear indication
  • Difficulty selecting or engaging a gear

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame and live transmission data for sensor B's signal and the selected gear, verifying that the fault coincides with a low reading.
  2. Inspect sensor B's connector for corrosion, moisture, pushed-back pins, or weak contact that can add resistance and lower the signal.
  3. Trace sensor B wiring for a short to ground, crushed insulation, or chafing along the selector and transmission harness.
  4. Measure sensor B's supply, ground, and signal circuit using the wiring diagram and compare results with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the circuit and connector are sound, test sensor B through lever movement and replace it only if its output stays below specification.

Common fixes

  • Clean corrosion and restore firm terminal contact at sensor B's connector.
  • Repair any sensor B wire shorted to ground or with damaged insulation.
  • Correct a loose connection or poor ground in the sensor B circuit.
  • Replace gear lever position sensor B if it continues to produce a low signal on a verified circuit.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving if the gear indication is wrong or the transmission does not reliably engage the selected position; this low signal can trigger restricted operation or unreliable gear recognition. Have it diagnosed promptly and do not drive when the actual gear is uncertain.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
