What it means
The ECM detects a circuit fault on the gear selection actuator position sensor. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The gear selection actuator moves transmission components to carry out commanded gear changes, and its position sensor reports how far it has moved. P2E10 sets when the control module detects an electrical fault in that sensor's circuit, making the actuator position unavailable for reliable shift control.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor failed
- Wiring or connector fault
Symptoms
- Check-engine or transmission warning light
- Delayed or failed gear changes
- Transmission may stay in one gear or enter a limited-operation mode
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and check live actuator-position and commanded-gear data to identify when the sensor circuit fault occurs.
- Note whether shifts are delayed or fail, and whether the transmission stays in one gear or enters limited operation.
- Inspect the actuator position sensor connector and harness for looseness, corrosion, moisture, or physical damage.
- Use the wiring diagram to check the sensor circuit for opens, shorts, and poor supply or ground connections.
- Test the sensor output and circuit against the manufacturer's specification to distinguish a failed sensor from a wiring fault.
Common fixes
- Reconnect the actuator position sensor connector and secure the harness.
- Repair damaged wiring or corroded connector terminals in the sensor circuit.
- Replace the gear selection actuator position sensor if it fails circuit testing.
- Clear the code and verify that actuator position tracks commanded shifts.
Can I keep driving?
Because the transmission may delay shifts, remain in one gear, or enter limited operation, avoid driving if gear changes are unreliable or the vehicle cannot select a suitable gear. Continued driving may leave you without dependable shifting; arrange diagnosis promptly.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
