What it means
The gear lever position sensor D reports a range/performance fault. Selector position cannot be measured reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Gear lever position sensor D supplies a position signal that the transmission control system checks for plausible values and movement. P2E0D sets when sensor D's circuit is present but its reading falls outside the expected range or does not follow lever movement, potentially because the sensor has drifted or shifted.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Position sensor failed
- Wiring or connector fault
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Check-engine or transmission warning light
- Incorrect gear indication
- Difficulty selecting or engaging a gear
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and watch live sensor D and selector-position readings while moving the lever through its normal positions with the vehicle secured.
- Check whether sensor D's signal is out of range or fails to change with the lever, and compare it with other available selector data.
- Inspect sensor D's mounting, connector, and wiring for displacement, looseness, corrosion, or damage.
- Check the sensor D circuit for opens, shorts, and poor connections using the vehicle wiring diagram.
- Compare sensor output and mounting alignment with the manufacturer's specification to identify sensor drift or installation issues.
Common fixes
- Secure a loose connector or correct displaced sensor mounting if the design allows adjustment.
- Repair damaged wiring or corroded terminals affecting sensor D's signal.
- Replace sensor D if its output remains outside the specified range or has drifted.
- Clear the code and verify the signal follows lever movement across the available positions.
Can I keep driving?
Sensor D's implausible reading can lead to incorrect gear indication, difficult engagement, or transmission limp mode. Avoid driving if gears do not engage predictably; otherwise, limit driving and arrange diagnosis promptly.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
