OBD-II fault code

P2E08: Gear Lever Position Sensor C Circuit

What it means

The gear lever position sensor C reports a circuit fault. Selector position cannot be measured reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Gear lever position sensor C provides one of the signals the transmission control system uses to identify selector position. The module monitors this signal and sets P2E08 when it detects an electrical circuit fault that makes sensor C's reading unreliable.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Position sensor failed
  2. Wiring or connector fault

Symptoms

  • Check-engine or transmission warning light
  • Incorrect gear indication
  • Difficulty selecting or engaging a gear

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check live selector-position data to see when sensor C becomes unavailable or implausible.
  2. With the vehicle safely parked, compare the indicated gear with the lever position and note any positions that fail to register.
  3. Inspect sensor C's connector and wiring for looseness, damage, moisture, or corrosion that could interrupt the circuit.
  4. Check the sensor C circuit for continuity, shorts, and secure connections using the vehicle wiring diagram.
  5. Test sensor C and its supply and ground circuits against the manufacturer's specification to isolate a failed sensor from a wiring fault.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect a loose sensor C connector and secure its wiring.
  • Repair damaged wiring or clean and repair corroded connector terminals.
  • Replace a failed gear lever position sensor C.
  • Clear the code and confirm sensor C reports selector positions consistently.

Can I keep driving?

Because the transmission may misread the selected gear or enter limp mode, avoid driving if gear engagement is uncertain or the vehicle selects an unexpected gear. If it shifts and indicates gears normally, limit driving and arrange diagnosis soon; continued use can leave you unable to select or engage a gear.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
