OBD-II fault code

P2E09: Gear Lever Position Sensor C Range/Performance

What it means

The gear lever position sensor C reports a range/performance fault. Selector position cannot be measured reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Gear lever position sensor C supplies a position signal that the transmission control system checks against the expected selector range and movement. P2E09 sets when the circuit is present but sensor C's reading is outside the expected range or does not change as expected, which can occur if the sensor has drifted beyond calibration.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Position sensor failed
  2. Wiring or connector fault
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check-engine or transmission warning light
  • Incorrect gear indication
  • Difficulty selecting or engaging a gear

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and watch live sensor C and selector-position data while moving the lever through its normal positions with the vehicle safely secured.
  2. Check whether sensor C's reading is consistently out of range or fails to track lever movement, and compare it with other available selector signals.
  3. Inspect sensor C's mounting and connector for displacement, looseness, damage, or corrosion that could skew its reading.
  4. Check the sensor C wiring for opens, shorts, or poor connections using the vehicle wiring diagram.
  5. Test sensor C's output and mounting alignment against the manufacturer's specification to distinguish sensor drift from installation or wiring faults.

Common fixes

  • Secure a loose connector or correct displaced sensor mounting where the design permits adjustment.
  • Repair damaged wiring or corroded terminals affecting sensor C's signal.
  • Replace sensor C if its output remains outside the specified range or its characteristic has drifted.
  • Clear the code and verify the reading tracks selector movement across the available positions.

Can I keep driving?

A range/performance fault can make the displayed gear disagree with the lever or trigger transmission limp mode. Avoid driving if gear engagement is inconsistent; if operation appears normal, keep trips short and arrange diagnosis promptly because the transmission may stop selecting gears reliably.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
