OBD-II fault code

P2E0C: Gear Lever Position Sensor D Circuit

What it means

The gear lever position sensor D reports a circuit fault. Selector position cannot be measured reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Gear lever position sensor D provides a separate selector-position signal to the transmission control system. P2E0C sets when the module detects an electrical fault in sensor D's circuit, so its reading cannot be trusted to identify the lever position.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Position sensor failed
  2. Wiring or connector fault

Symptoms

  • Check-engine or transmission warning light
  • Incorrect gear indication
  • Difficulty selecting or engaging a gear

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and monitor live sensor D and selector-position data to see when the circuit fault appears.
  2. With the vehicle safely parked, compare the indicated gear with the lever position and note whether the problem occurs at particular positions.
  3. Inspect sensor D's connector and wiring for damage, looseness, moisture, or corrosion.
  4. Check the sensor D circuit for opens, shorts, and poor connections using the vehicle wiring diagram.
  5. Test sensor D and its supply and ground circuits against the manufacturer's specification to locate the fault.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect a loose sensor D connector and secure the harness.
  • Repair damaged wiring or corroded connector terminals in the sensor D circuit.
  • Replace a failed gear lever position sensor D.
  • Clear the code and confirm sensor D reports selector movement consistently.

Can I keep driving?

An unreliable sensor D reading can cause incorrect gear indication, difficult gear engagement, or transmission limp mode. Avoid driving if the gear selected is unclear or engagement is abnormal; if the vehicle operates normally, limit use and arrange diagnosis soon.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
