OBD-II fault code

P2C13: B Camshaft Profile Actuator Position Sensor A Range/Performance Bank 1

What it means

The control module detects that the signal from camshaft profile actuator position sensor A on bank 1 is outside the expected range or does not respond as expected.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The B camshaft profile actuator adjusts the cam profile, and sensor A on bank 1 reports the actuator’s position to the control module. This code sets when that signal is electrically present but falls outside the expected range or fails to track the commanded position as expected.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor offset drifted
  2. Actuator mechanism worn
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
  • Possible rough idle or stalling
  • Increased fuel consumption

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and monitor live bank 1 sensor A position while noting engine speed and actuator command when the fault appears.
  2. Check the sensor A connector and wiring for damage, poor contact, oil intrusion, or corrosion that could distort the signal.
  3. Compare the commanded and reported position for sensor A using scan-tool data and the manufacturer’s expected operating behavior.
  4. Inspect the bank 1 actuator mechanism for sticking, wear, or restricted movement that could keep sensor A from following the command.
  5. If the mechanism moves freely and wiring is sound, test sensor A’s signal and calibration against the manufacturer’s procedure.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure the sensor A connector or repair poor terminal contact.
  • Repair wiring that causes an unstable or out-of-range sensor A signal.
  • Replace sensor A if its output has drifted beyond the manufacturer’s calibration limits.
  • Repair or replace the bank 1 actuator if wear or binding prevents it reaching the commanded position.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid hard acceleration and long trips until the bank 1 actuator position mismatch is diagnosed; reduced power, rough idle, or stalling can make driving unpredictable. Stop safely if it stalls or runs very roughly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
