What it means
The position sensor A of camshaft profile actuator A on bank 1 reports a range/performance bank 1 condition. Cam profile selection feedback cannot be measured reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Camshaft profile actuator A on bank 1 selects a cam profile, and position sensor A reports the actuator’s position to the control module. P2C06 sets when the feedback is electrically present but its range or response does not match the expected actuator movement or calibration.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor offset drifted
- Actuator mechanism worn
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
- Possible rough idle or stalling
- Increased fuel consumption
How to diagnose it
- Use freeze-frame and live data to compare commanded and reported positions for bank 1 actuator A, noting when their readings diverge.
- Inspect sensor A’s connector and harness at the bank 1 camshaft profile actuator for damage, looseness, or contamination.
- Check whether sensor A’s reported position changes smoothly through actuator movement, following the manufacturer’s test procedure.
- Check the actuator mechanism for binding or wear that could keep the position reading outside the expected range.
- If the mechanism moves freely and wiring is sound, test sensor A for offset drift and compare its output with the manufacturer’s specification.
Common fixes
- Repair a loose, damaged, or contaminated connection at bank 1 sensor A.
- Correct a binding or worn cam profile actuator A mechanism on bank 1.
- Replace sensor A on bank 1 if its position signal is offset or outside specification.
- Replace actuator A on bank 1 if it cannot achieve the commanded profile position.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid hard acceleration because power may be reduced in the mid-range, and limit driving if the engine idles roughly. Stop if it stalls or becomes difficult to control in traffic; continued operation may increase fuel use and keep the engine on an unsuitable cam profile.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
